On the Mojave Trail over New Year 2007 - 2008
The Mojave trail trip finishes up going along the Mojave
river bed through Afton canyon with eroded walls. This
area is in the Manix fault zone . The
walls are a combination of conglomerate and alluvium show
many types of soils in several colours, including brown,
blue-gray, red, black-gray, pink and light gray. I
took several pictures of the canyon walls to try to provide
a representative sample of the colours and shapes to be
seen there.
Part
of the Mojave trail goes through a Joshua tree
forest
Part of the Mojave trail goes through Soda Lake, a large dry
lake bed. In the middle of the lake bed is a plaque commemorating
an event that took place there in the late 1800's. It
is traditional for travelers to bring a rock with them and
lay it on the pile surrounding the plaque
Sections of the trail are in sand washes
And some parts are over fields of volcanic rocks. Photo by
