In the four corners area September 2008. These pictures are from a 27 day trip of which I was accompanied by Linus Tremaine & Nikkie for 2 weeks.
I wrote a journal for this trip but there are a lot of pictures that didn't fit into the journal, several of which are being posted here.
There were a lot of pictures of the Anasazi ruins in Mesa Verde that did not fit in my on line journal. Here are some I didn't have space for.
There are 3 kivas visible in this picture. Ceremonies in kivas were a central part of Anasazi life
The Mesa Verdens used a very different wall construction technique than the Chaco Indians. As you can see, multi story wall construction is a single block wide wall using dressed rectangular blocks. The walls of course are shorter and sit against cave walls or the ceiling for additional stability. The Chaco Indians. built tapering walls for their free standing multi story structures, often 3 feet wide at the first floor level. Construction was usually dressed rock blocks on both sides and relatively undressed rocks filling the middle.
The rectangular tower is at least 4 stories tall. Depending upon the ground level there may be a lower story below we do not see.
Most of the rock formations in Arches is monochromatic being the same kind of sandstone. But the bluffs higher up on the plateau show a layer of lighter coloured sand stone.

Below are pictures taken in Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park in September 2008
There are a few brief minutes in the dawn when the sun fist strike the red sandstone rocks that the rocks take on a glow almost as of lit from the inside
Then, after just a few minutes that internal fire from dawn's early light extinguishes and you are just left with red sandstone rocks carved into fantastic shapes
There were some interesting petroglyphs near our camp site
