It is hard to believe that it has been 20 years since the Mendo recce mail list was created to plan for an exploratory trip into the Mendocino National Forest. Or that this temporary list has since grown to become a Western US focused Land Rover discussion list. Or that the original exploratory trip has become an annual gathering of list members. During that 20 years we have grown into an extended family. Children have been born and have grown up as we shared more than just Land Rover tech information. Wow! 20 years, who would have believed it back then. The weather for Mendo XX copied that of Mendo XV except it was perhaps a little colder. Cold weather, some light snow and some rain. And of course the day after Mendo XX was warm and sunny at the camp. Like Mendo XV we had the largest turnout of Land Rovers ever. Ben Smith, our statistician, counted a total of 63 Land Rovers of which 37 were Series trucks.
But the annual Mendo gathering is so much more than a gathering of Land Rovers. It is more a gathering of an extended family with daily trail runs, conversations around camp fires and of course the Saturday evening pot luck.
Sign at the base of the campground. I think one or two people had arrived Wednesday followed by more on Thursday and early Friday morning, all eager to claim a flat camp site before they were gone.
